What Are Rosehips?

Rosehips are the accessory fruit produced by various species of rose through the fall and early winter. The red fruits typically range in color from orange to red, but some species can also be found in dark purple to black. They have one of the highest concentrations of vitamin C available. In addition to being edible, nutritious, and medicinal, rose hips boast an array of skin benefits.

The Skin Benefits Of Rosehips

With anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties, vitamins, minerals, and more, rose hips are a powerhouse of skin-boosting benefits packed in a little red orb.

Supreme Hydration

Rosehips are high in linoleic acid, which is the most abundant fatty acid in the skin. Linoleic acid plays an essential role in maintaining the skin’s natural barrier and preventing trans-epidermal water loss.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Rosehips are rich in vitamins A, B complex, C, and E. They also contain carotenoids and polyphenols that help to visibly reduce skin inflammation.

UV Damage Protection

Rosehips have a high vitamin C content, which protects the skin from UV damage while neutralizing harmful free radicals.

Collagen Boosting

Collagen is a naturally occurring protein found in cells. When collagen production is reduced, particularly due to UV damage, it speeds up the aging process and causes signs of photoaging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. This is another instance where the rose hip's high vitamin C content shines, preventing collagen damage to keep your skin youthful.

Scar and Dark Spot Reduction

A study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology found that rosehips could promote tissue regeneration, reduce dark spots, improve acne scarring, and help minimize or prevent post-surgical scars.

The Method:

  • Step 1 - Infuse the OilsPlace the rosehips in a small, sterilized mason jar. Pour the jojoba and apricot kernel oil into the jar. Cover and gently shake the jar to combine the oils and rosehips. Then, set it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Leave it to infuse for 3-4 weeks.

  • Step 2 - Strain the InfusionTo strain the infused oil, remove the lid and ring of your jar. Place a double-layer square of cheesecloth over the jar top and replace the ring. Using a funnel, strain the oil directly into your dropper bottle. If using whole or foraged rosehips, use a coffee filter instead of cheesecloth to ensure that you are straining out the fine seed hairs that can irritate the skin.

  • Step 3 - Store Your Facial SerumTo store your DIY Rosehip Facial Serum, use an amber bottle to protect the oil from sunlight light, and store it away from sunlight for up to a year.
